Extending previous work on German, Manfred and I discuss a lexicalist approach to German sentence structure. Based on empirical observations about the distribution of inflectional morphems at the left periphery of finite sentences in a number of Germanic languages, and on observations that reveal clear differences between finite verbs in sentence initial and sentence final position, we argue that the region of the German finite sentence that precedes the Mittelfeld should receive a unified lexical analysis. We present a formal syntactic and semantic account of our theory.
