Prepositional Phrases: explaing the complex annotation

The textbook contains a c-structure rule for VP like the following:

1. VP → V          PP
       ↑=↓   (↑ (↓ PCASE)) = ↓

which translates into the following xlfg rule:

4. (↑ (↓2 PCASE)) = ↓2;
