Manfred Sailer was invited to give a talk at the department of English Linguistics of the Katholische Universität Eichstätt on January 20, 2020. Manfred’s talk on “Words and idioms: Holistic and analytic aspects of idiom uses” was part of a course on Construction Grammar by Thomas Hoffmann.

Manfred summarized central arguments for holistic and analytic approaches to idioms and tried to sketch an approach that uses multiword constructions, i.e., non-local constructions that only contain the specification of the lexical material of an idiom but leave its phrasal syntax largely underspecified. The talk is partly based on joint work with Sascha Bargmann, Jamie Findlay (Oxford), and Frank Richter.
